How to add a Mastodon profile to your social wall?

To add Mastodon profile sources to your social wall, go to Settings > Sources in your Walls.io dashboard and select Mastodon:

Enter both the username and instance of the Mastodon profile (i.e. @YourUsername@YourInstance) or the full URL (i.e. https://mastodon.social/@YourUsername).

For example, if you want to pull posts from the Walls.io Mastodon profile, you should add @walls_io@mastodon.world or https://mastodon.world/@walls_io:

How to add a Mastodon hashtag to your social wall?

To add Mastodon hashtags as sources to your social wall, go to Settings > Sources, select Mastodon and Hashtag:

Enter the full URL of a hashtag (i.e. https://mastodon.world/tags/HASHTAG) as a source. For example, if you want to pull posts with the #wallsio hashtag published on the mastodon.world instance, you'll have to add this URL: https://mastodon.world/tags/wallsio

For collecting posts (with the #wallsio hashtag) from another instance i.e. mastodon.social, add this URL https://mastodon.social/tags/wallsio as a separate hashtag source.

❗️IMPORTANT: Since Mastodon is a distributed network, you’ll have to add a hashtag source for every Mastodon instance where you want to follow the hashtag.

How to find the full URL of a hashtag?

1. Open a Mastodon instance (i.e. https://mastodon.social/ or https://mastodon.world/ etc). Please note that you do not need to have an account there!

2. Type your hashtag in the search bar (bottom left) and click on the hashtag:

3. Copy the URL and add it as a hashtag source.

I'm having issues with hashtags; what's wrong?

❗️It’s not possible to create a source for a brand-new hashtag

The Mastodon API (=application programming interface for tools like ours) only allows Walls.io to fetch posts for hashtags that have been used on Mastodon before. An easy way around this is to simply publish a dummy public post on Mastodon using the hashtag and then try adding it to your social wall.

❗️We only fetch public posts

If a specific post is missing, the reason could be that the user has set their profile or a specific post to "Unlisted," or "Followers-only" or "Mentioned people only". Such profiles or posts are not accessible through hashtag sources for privacy reasons.

❗️The post might be published on a different instance

As mentioned above, Mastodon is a distributed, decentralized network. This means that adding a hashtag source from one instance (let's say mastodon.social), does not necessarily capture posts from another instance (let's say mastodon.world). We, therefore, recommend adding several hashtag sources for instances popular or relevant to your community.

You can only add multiple social sources per platform in the paid accounts.
